Cambridge Participates in Operation Cooperation
Waterloo Region – As the devastation from the Haiti earthquake continues to unfold, the Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is undertaking a multi-million dollar, multi-year response to provide emergency assistance, long-term care and trauma support. Now through February 28, the MCC is looking for donations of personal hygiene items, cotton sheets and towels. Their national goal is to collect and distribute 20,000 relief kits to the thousands of Haitians left homeless and living outside.

Operation: Cooperation- Waterloo Region has joined forces with the MCC Ontario to assist in broadening their campaign throughout our community. By coordinating the community’s efforts, Operation: Cooperation has significantly expanded relief kit drop off locations for the public. As well, they’re offering to provide assistance to other organizations wanting to set up kit collection areas at their workplaces.

“The idea behind Operation: Cooperation is simple,” said Linda Zavarella, Committee Chair. “Beyond all of the money raised, we want to do something meaningful and tangible for the Haiti earthquake victims.”

Organizations that have already joined Operation: Cooperation to provide additional public drop off locations or staff collection campaigns include: the Region of Waterloo, the cities of, Cambridge, Kitchener and Waterloo (including their fire stations), UW Research & Technology Park, University of Waterloo, CTV Southwestern Ontario, IBI Group, The May Court Nearly New Shop, Region of Waterloo Emergency Medical Services and
St. John Ambulance.

“The support we are receiving from the community is overwhelming”, said Rick Cober Bauman, MCC Ontario Executive Director. "I’m confident that Operation: Cooperation-Waterloo Region will help us in our immediate efforts to reach our overall MCC international goal of 20,000 Haiti relief kits, as well as deepening this community's understanding of our long term commitment to Haiti.”
