Regional CUPE Outside Workers In Position To Strike February 17th

Several Months Of Negotiating Already Under Their Belts

An important announcement regarding the potential disruption of  Regional services

Waterloo Region – Discussions are continuing between the Region of Waterloo and Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 1656, representing outside workers. Local 1656 will legally be in a position to strike as early as 12:01 a.m. the morning of February 17, 2010. 
 
CUPE 1656 workers are involved in Regional services such as waste management, airport operations, rural road maintenance – including winter maintenance, snow plowing and salting, Grand River Transit stockroom, water supply, traffic signals maintenance and Waterloo Region Housing maintenance.
 
The parties have been meeting regularly for the past several months and negotiations are continuing. The Region of Waterloo and CUPE Local 1656 will be making every effort to reach a settlement so that residents will not be impacted.
 
The parties have agreed to a media blackout which will be in effect until further notice.
 
No further updates are expected at this time.
