Safer Campus Communities

(Waterloo, ON) – The Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) today launched the 2011 Campus Communities Campaign at Waterloo Regional Police Service Headquarters in Cambridge, Ontario.

The aim of the campaign is to build awareness about the rights and responsibilities related to university and college students living within campus communities — whether on- or off-campus — as well as the dangers related to inappropriate or excessive alcohol consumption.

As police leaders, we focus on building partnerships with all of our communities to promote personal and community safety, said OACP President Chief Matt Torigian (Waterloo Regional Police Service).

Police services in Ontario work closely with various campus and community groups to promote responsible campus and community living.

The 2011 Campus Communities Campaign features a booklet which includes information to assist residents and local businesses living and operating within a university and/or college community. The booklet provides helpful tips on how to both welcome and integrate new students into the community. The campaign also has a website which has been designed to assist young people in making informed and responsible choices both as new members of their campus community and in relation to alcohol consumption and awareness. Posters featuring an exciting contest will be prominently displayed at colleges and universities across Ontario, directing students to the website.

The OACP thanks Smart Serve Ontario, txtBlocker, Interac, and Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada for their support of the 2011 Campus Communities Campaign and all our campus communities.
