Canadians Have Been Fleeced

Cell phone and wireless device carrier charges are 30% higher in the Canadian market than in any other developed country. Surprised? Not really. Canadians are used to this sort of luxury use abuse.

Up until now, Canadians have not been able to port their wireless phone numbers with competing carriers because they were unable to transfer their numbers. This will change March 14th of this year.

The CRTC watchdog (Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission) has handed down a decree that will force the major players Bell; Rogers; TELUS and others to comply with the new regulation and that they must allow customers to switch without charge (so we've heard).

Ruling Should Help Reduce Charges

When people have choice, it usually helps bring prices down. The giants will not reduce their rates until they are forced to. Up until now it's been a real hassle switching cell phone service providers (even if you're mad as hell!) because of the vast number of contacts who already know your phone number...and many of these numbers are printed on business materials which are very expensive to produce. This has allowed wireless carriers to throw it to the consumer. Alas; this doesn't have to happen anymore.

If you have been unsatisfied with your service, phone your carrier (toll-free number, of course) on March 14th and tell them so. Ask them for a better deal NOW! You deserve it.

We know this new consumer advantage will make a lot of people happy. It certainly makes us happy. Canadians shouldn't have to pay 30% more than the rest of the world. It is pathetic that this has gone on as long as it has.
